How many new ABC license applications are filed in California each month?

This site counts 684 applications on California ABC's daily new applications reports dated in August 2026, its latest complete month, before the privacy filter; 315 are for license types 41, 42, 47 and 48, four of ABC's on-sale types.

What the count covers

Applications on the California ABC daily new applications report, from the report dated 6 July 2026 to the report dated 25 September 2026. They are applications filed, not licenses issued. The on-sale figure counts four of ABC's on-sale license types: 41, 42, 47 and 48. Applications for its other on-sale types are counted as applications and not as on-sale. The file a subscriber receives is one county's share of one week of these reports. It leaves out any application listed under its primary owner's name, because it has no trading name or its trading name is the owner's name, when that name reads as a person's name or as the names of two or more people.

A month here is the month of a report's date, and ABC's report page describes each report as "A list of new applications taken by California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) on the selected report date." A month is complete once the month has ended and the report dates counted run from on or before its first day to on or after its last. ABC's new applications report is free and shows one report date at a time, for the whole state, with a button that downloads that date's report as a CSV file. It gives no total for a month, so counting one yourself means downloading the report for each date in the month that has one and adding up the rows.
