Contractor workers' comp policy expirations by county

Across California, 23,235 contractor licenses on the CSLB classification lists, downloaded on 4 September 2026, have a workers' compensation policy that has no cancellation date recorded and expires on or after that date and on or before 3 December 2026, 90 days after it.

Last updated 24 September 2026. The numbers are rebuilt every Monday from the newest CSLB classification lists, and a new set is downloaded once a month.

What this counts

Counts from the classification lists downloaded from CSLB on 4 September 2026, for licenses whose address is in California or gives no state. The licenses figure counts all of them, whatever their insurance. The policy holders figure counts the licenses with a current workers' compensation insurance policy, one with no cancellation date recorded that expires on or after 4 September 2026. The expiring figure counts those whose policy expires on or after 4 September 2026 and on or before 3 December 2026. A list that fails to download is not counted. Across California, 6,120 of the 23,235 expiring licenses are held by sole owners, which the file a subscriber receives leaves out.

Licenses: Licenses on one day's download of the CSLB classification lists whose address is in California or gives no state, whatever their insurance.
Policy holders: Licenses on one day's download of the CSLB classification lists whose address is in California or gives no state, with a current workers' compensation insurance policy: no cancellation date recorded, and expiring on or after the day of the download.
Expiring: Licenses on one day's download of the CSLB classification lists whose address is in California or gives no state, with a workers' compensation insurance policy that has no cancellation date recorded and expires on or after the day of the download and on or before 90 days after it. Counted before the privacy filter, so sole owners are included.
The last column is the expiring count divided by the policy holder count, to one decimal place. A share swings widely where there are few policy holders, because one policy more or less moves it a long way. A county with no expiring license is not listed, and the last row is all of California, the licenses in no county included.

Not in a county: 21 licenses, 18 policy holders and 6 expiring. Licenses on one day's download of the CSLB classification lists whose address is in California or gives no state, and that cannot be placed in a California county: the lists leave the county blank, or give a county that does not match the name of any of the 58 California counties. In the expiring column, the counties in the table and the 6 here add up to the 23,235 in its last row.

Where the numbers come from

Source: California Contractors State License Board, public data portal. The counts are built from its lists of contractors by license classification. Each license's row gives its address, its county and its workers' compensation insurance, with the date the policy expires, and a license in more than one classification is counted once. CSLB makes no charge for the lists and says each is current at the time it is downloaded, so this page dates its snapshot by the day the lists were downloaded.

The file

This page is built from renewals_stats.json, which is updated at the same time and holds every count on this page, and each county's expiring count split by month and by class group as well. Each series in it carries a label saying what it counts. The shares in the table are not stored in it: they are worked out on this page from the two counts in each row.

For the licenses themselves, see the weekly file, for one county or all of California. It is a different set from these counts. Each Monday's file takes its 90 days from that Monday rather than from 4 September 2026, and it leaves out sole owners, and any license whose business name reads as a person's name unless CSLB lists it as a corporation or a limited liability company.
